We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.

Wuthering Heights (AroVision, March 31)

From Emerald Fennell, the director of the provocative Promising Young Woman and the salacious Saltburn comes Wuthering Heights, a controversial adaptation of Emily Brontë’s classic novel that stars heartthrobs Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi as Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff. Set to an “amorous” soundtrack album by pop’s It Girl Charli XCX, the decadent and steamy film chronicles their all-consuming, tumultuous love story, and its tragic consequences. Fennell’s film may disappoint fans of the source material, but “it works best if you try to put the text out of your brain and just enjoy the pleasures of the towering Elordi lifting Robbie with one hand by her corset.” Ripe with carnal desire, Wuthering Heights is sure to get your heart racing.

Stumble (TVNZ+, April 2)

Written by veteran comedy showrunner siblings Liz and Jeff Astrof, mockumentary sitcom Stumble follows Jenn Lyon as Courteney Potter, a champion cheer coach fired from her position after she’s caught drinking with her squad. Heading to pastures new at Heådltston State Junior College, the cheerful coach must stage the ultimate comeback by leading a ragtag team of loveable misfits to a championship crown. Described as “a flipping good time,” you’ll fall head over heels for Stumble if you’re a fan of Parks and Recreation and The Office.

A Knight’s Tale (TVNZ+, April 1)

Directed by the Oscar-winning Brian Helgeland, the rousing and beloved A Knight’s Tale features Heath Ledger as William Thatcher, a peasant squire who fulfils his dream of becoming a knight. Disguising himself as his aristocratic master who is found dead in a ditch minutes before he’s due in the arena for a jousting tournament, Thatcher wins the joust and keeps up the ruse, hoping to better his social position, attain glory, and woo the beautiful Lady Jocelyn. Unabashedly full of whimsy and silliness, A Knight’s Tale is the joyful antidote to the ills of a bleak workweek.

Your Friends and Neighbours (Apple TV, April 3)

In season two of Your Friends and Neighbours, Jon Hamm returns as Andrew “Coop” Cooper, a recently divorced and unemployed New York hedge fund manager who resorts to stealing from his wealthy neighbours to stay afloat. He could’ve returned to his privileged former life, but the unlikely cat-burglar doubles down on his lawbreaking lifestyle in the latest season of this satirical crime drama. The arrival of James Marsden’s Owen Ashe is another spanner in the works, as the new neighbour sees Coop for who he really is. With Hamm “back in Don Draper territory“, the latest season of this “blackly comic, propulsively fun tale” is well worth a watch.

I Shot the President (DocPlay, March 30)

You’ve likely heard of John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald, but John Hinckley Jr. is a name unfamiliar to most. In 1981 as U.S. president Ronald Reagan left the Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C. Hinckley Jr. attempted to assassinate the recently inaugurated president in hopes of impressing Jodie Foster who he had become obsessed with after watching Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver. Found not guilty by reason of insanity, Hinckley Jr. is finally free after spending 35 years in a psychiatric hospital, and is now the subject of the “compelling” I Shot the President. Examining the dark side of the American dream, this provocative documentary is not to be missed.

Pick of the Flicks: Millie Lies Low (MĀORI+, April 5)

Inspired by a true story, Millie Lies Low, New Zealand director Michelle Savill’s debut feature, stars Ana Scotney as the titular Millie, an architecture student from Pōneke who’s landed an internship at a prestigious firm in New York. But when she suffers a panic attack and misses her flight to the Big Apple, the would-be architect decides to keep up the pretence of a new life by posting fake life updates to social media. Labelled as a “shrewd and promising debut,” the tension-filled dramedy is a sharp exploration of the “tawdry reality behind the idealised, globalised lifestyle to which so many aspire.” With shades of Fleabag, be sure to check out this modern local classic.
