Kākāpō only breed when rimu trees are producing an unusually large amount of fruit, which is known as masting. It has been four years since this last happened, so it’s been a pretty long wait for the world’s heaviest parrot. There are only 236 kākāpō in existence, but this breeding season, with 83 breeding-age females, we might see more kākāpō chicks than we’ve seen in any season since records began. Good luck out there, kākāpō.
