Euphoria (Neon, April 13)
HBO’s Euphoria, the launchpad for the careers of Zendaya, Jacob Elordi and Sydney Sweeney, has finally returned for a long-delayed third and rumoured-to-be-final season. The first season to be set outside of East Highland High School sees Zendaya’s Rue stuck in the desert, Elordi’s Nate inheriting his father’s real estate business, and Sweeney’s Cassie hoping to get famous on OnlyFans. This latest season of Euphoria may be dividing critics and fans alike, but it’s certainly “as tawdry and titillating as ever.”
BEEF (Netflix, April 16)
Rejoice, as BEEF, the Emmy Award-winning anthology series from creator and showrunner Lee Sung Jin, is back for a second season. Returning with a new cast and new beef, Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny are a newly-engaged Gen Z couple who both work at a luxurious country club. Pitted against their boss (Oscar Isaac) and his partner (Carey Mulligan), their unhappy union “triggers chess moves and manipulations that ripple far beyond” the country clubs manicured greens, and pristine pools. Get ready, as one critic put it: “Beef is no longer a filet mignon — it’s a whole rib eye.”
The Cats of Gokogu Shrine (DocPlay, April 16)
Premiering at the Berlin Film Festival, The Cats of Gokogu Shrine is set in the picturesque small coastal town of Ushimado in Japan’s Okayama Prefecture, where a Shinto-shrine has become home to a colony of stray cats. Helmed by observational documentarian Kazuhiro Soda, the sweet film focuses on these feline residents who, for the most part, peacefully co-exist with a community at a crossroads. Offering a “gentle, hopeful vision of a world where we can find harmony amidst the chaos,” The Cats of Gokogu Shrine is bound to heal your soul.
Caught Stealing (Neon, April 16)
From Darren Aronofsky, director of Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, and Black Swan comes this “violent, chaotic and highly enjoyable crime flick.” Adapted by Charlie Huston from his novel of the same name, the film stars Austin Butler as Hank, a washed-up former baseball star and booze-addicted bartender in New York. He’s tasked with looking after his neighbour’s cat, which is where the trouble begins. With a “tight, twisty script, meaningful stakes, a top director (Darren Aronofsky), and an A-plus cast,” this will be one wild watch.
Margo’s Got Money Troubles (Apple TV, April 15)
Created by David E. Kelley, and based on Rufi Thorpe’s novel of the same name, Margo’s Got Money Troubles stars Elle Fanning as Margo Millet, a young mother and college dropout. She’s struggling to make ends meet, so the titular lead turns to OnlyFans to support herself. “Refreshing in its open-minded approach to pornography and sex work,” the comedy-drama also features Michelle Pfeiffer as Margo’s mother, and Nick Offerman as Jinx Millet, her estranged father. “Star-studded, smart, and sexy,” this big-hearted TV show is right on the money.
Pick of the Flicks: Everybody Wants Some!! (Neon, April 19)
Before Glen Powell became the heir to Tom Cruise’s crown, he got his big-break as Walt “Finn” Finnegan in Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!!, a spiritual sequel to the legendary Dazed and Confused. Set in 1980, the low-key hangout comedy follows Blake Jenner as all-state baseball pitcher and college freshman Jake Bradford in the hazy few days before he starts college. One of his new teammates and roommates is Powell’s Finn, an effortlessly cool ladies’ man. Capturing “the essence of all sorts of youthful desires” this home run of a film is a “perfectly pitched blast of nostalgia.”
