His brother is standing for Opportunity in his electorate, but he’ll be voting National

Owen Huang doesn’t want a citizen’s income, he wants Simeon Brown representing him.

Name: Owen Huang

Age: 25

Occupation: Unemployed. But I have a psychology degree and I’d like to do that.

Family/relationship: I’m engaged.

Electorate: Pakuranga.

Who will you vote for? As MP? Simeon Brown. Two ticks blue. I’ll probably still do two ticks blue even though my brother is the Opportunity candidate. I don’t really agree with their policies.

What appeals about National and Simeon Brown? Simeon Brown’s Christian first of all. I’m Christian. He goes to my church. And when he was transport minister, he did a great job. Not a lot of ministers do a good job at that role.

What are the three biggest issues for you this election? Public transport for sure. I’ve got to admit, the Greens have got the best one there, but I don’t like the party. But if we have better public transport, I think it’s a better New Zealand in general. Not tax. My family’s well-off. That’s actually my issue with Opportunity. I don’t need the citizen’s income, I’m more worried about my land getting taxed. I think government terms, we should have a five-year term. There’s so many resources wasted when a new party comes in. Then maybe the aging population and the brain drain. All my friends have left to find better options overseas. I don’t have many friends left. I’m lonely.

Do you discuss politics with your family and friends (and if you do, how do those conversations go)? Yes. With my brother. And some of my friends work for a non-profit organisation called Pillar. I talk to them.

Describe NZ right now in three words. Up the wahs.

If you had to get the face of one politician (past or present) tattooed onto your body, who would it be? Simeon Brown I think.

Will you vote on election day or beforehand? I am attending a wedding on election day so I’ll be doing it before. Not my wedding. That’s next year.

What will you do on election night? I’ll be at a wedding reception party looking at the news on my phone.
