We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.
Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont Spelling Bee AU (ThreeNow, July 17)
What began as a comedic Covid-19 pastime has transformed into a hit spelling-centric TV game show for comedian Guy Montgomery. The across-the-ditch adaptation of Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont Spelling Bee sees master of ceremonies Montgomery aided by Aaron Chen, one of Australia’s finest comedians. Containing five rounds per episode, comedians like Urzila Carlson, Tom Gleeson and Tim Minchin are put through their paces as they attempt to spell a stupefying smorgasbord of words in the hopes of being crowned this week’s best speller. Labelled as “an absolute d-e-l-i-g-h-t”, this TV game show will leave you spellbound.
Game On (ThreeNow, July 15)
In the spiritual footsteps of Match Fit, Three’s docu-reality series Game On sees a handful of New Zealand netball icons take the court with six promising young athletes for a high-stakes tournament where they’ll battle top teams and international legends. With these former Silver Ferns at the helm, the rising stars embark on a blood, sweat and tear-strewn journey of growth and guidance, staking a place as the future of the sport. Aided by teammates like Irene van Dyk, Temepara Bailey and Casey Kopua, the old and the new guard of netball must unite if they stand a chance at winning the top-level tournament. Game on!
Lee (Neon, July 20)
Adapted from the biography The Lives of Lee Miller, Oscar-winner Kate Winslet plays the titular Lee, a fashion model who became an acclaimed war photographer. Beginning with an interview with a journalist in the mid-1970s that frames the film, the piercing picture rolls back time to chart the indelible years Lee spent capturing the horrors of World War Two. You’ve likely seen her epochal photos of the liberation of Paris and the German concentration camps, but “Winslet’s performance demands that we consider the force behind the camera“.
The Summer I Turned Pretty (Prime Video, July 16)
From Jenny Han’s best-selling trilogy of romance novels comes the third and final season of The Summer I Turned Pretty, which picks up two years after Belly (Lola Tung) shockingly chose Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) over his brother Conrad (Christopher Briney). Soundtracked by Taylor Swift, the two are planning their future together and are getting ready to tie the knot, but a series of salacious and seismic events sees Conrad entering Belly’s orbit again. With the future no longer set in stone, only one thing is beyond doubt: summer will never be the same for this entangled trifecta of lovebirds.
Eat Well for Less NZ (TVNZ+, July 14)
Chef Michael Van de Elzen and food educator Ganesh Raj are back for season five of Eat Well for Less NZ, the TV show that helps regular New Zealand whānau ditch their unhealthy and/or excessively expensive food habits. Facing their harshest critics yet who are resistant to change and avoidant of food that isn’t prefixed with the word “fast”, the eager duo take charge of the kitchens of six households in need of a culinary makeover. Spotlighting how these families can shop smarter, cook more nutritious meals and save a small fortune in the process, Eat Well for Less is “helplessly addictive viewing“.
Pick of the Flicks: Architecton (DocPlay, July 14)
A documentary about how stone and concrete architecture express the values of society might seem like a bit of a bore, but A24 and Viktor Kossakovsky’s Architecton is described as “blatantly dazzling, epic-scale filmmaking” that “invites viewers to consider the implications of our awe.” Reminiscent of the jaw-dropping Koyaanisqatsi and the cosmic Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey, if you’ve ever wondered why man-made monuments like the St James Theatre, the Christ Church Cathedral and the Bridge to Nowhere move us, Architecton is bound to bowl you over with its elemental reverence.
