New Zealand Spy (TVNZ+, April 29)

Earmarked by The Spinoff as one of the most exciting TV shows of 2026, star-studded comedy series New Zealand Spy features Rose Matafeo, Paul Williams, Joe Thomas and Bret McKenzie. Set in the 1960s and 70s and taking place at a New Zealand Intelligence Agency where intelligence is strictly optional, the offbeat James Bond parody follows Matafeo, Williams and Thomas as they play three inexperienced and incompetent recruits. Together they deliver a “bold and hilarious take on the spy genre to rival Get Smart and Austin Powers.

Celebrity Treasure Island (TVNZ+, April 27)

The seventh season of local reality series Celebrity Treasure Island sees a “new bumper crop of familiar faces arrive to provide a welcome family-friendly escape” from the doldrums. Hosted by Bree Tomasel and Jayden Daniels, the likes of Shortland Street’s Ben Barrington, TikTok’s Louis Davis and the Black Ferns’ Portia Woodman-Wickliffe are making their way to an undisclosed Northland location in the hope of taking home $100,000 for a charity of their choice. With the tagline “Wisdom vs. Fury”, the new season of Celebrity Treasure Island is bound to be a “brilliant blast“.

Game of 2 Halves (ThreeNow, May 1)

Expanding to a one-hour format, Game of 2 Halves is back for a second season. Hosted by Laura McGoldrick and Chris Key, this revival of the 2000s-era TVNZ hit show offers a shot of old-fashioned quiz values, as panelists like Josh Thomson and Dai Henwood join athletes like Olivia McTaggart, Janay Harding and Leroy Carter for a comedy quiz show that’s enjoyable for everyone – even if you’re not a die-hard sports fan. If you’re a devotee of 7 Days or the Crowd Goes Wild, you’ll love the side-splitting Game of 2 Halves.

Cold Storage (AroVision, April 28)

In this “goofy B-movie throwback“, Stranger Things star Joe Keery is Travis “Teacake” Meacham, an employee at a self-storage complex whose shift goes horribly awry when a parasitic fungus, sealed away and forgotten by the US government, escapes. Based on David Koepp’s 2019 novel of the same name, the self-aware sci-fi horror-comedy also features Georgina Campbell and Liam Neeson, who work alongside Teacake to try and contain the creeping fungus. Striking a “nifty balance between the sardonic and the stressful“, Cold Storage is “a genuinely good time“.

Widow’s Bay (Apple TV, April 29)

Created by Parks and Recreation’s Katie Dippold and directed by Atlanta’s Hiro Murai, the comedy horror series Widow’s Bay stars the chameleonic Matthew Rhys as Tom Loftis, the mayor of a quaint island town. Sitting 40 miles off the New England coast, the bumbling Loftis is attempting to turn his isolated town into a bustling tourist hotspot, but he’s first got to contend with the leering locals who believe their island is cursed. Unfortunately, the locals were right as the historic town has more than more than a few skeletons in its cobwebbed closet. Reminiscent of The Wicker Man and Jaws, Widow’s Bay is sure to have you squealing in delight and dismay.

Pick of the Flicks: Game Night (Neon, May 1)

Directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the throwback studio comedy Game Night has aged like fine wine, garnering a cult following as “a snot-laughing comical masterpiece that improves on every rewatch“. Featuring a jam-packed ensemble cast that includes Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams and Jesse Plemons, the rapturously funny film follows a close-knit group of friends whose game night turns into a real-life mystery when one of them is kidnapped. Labelled as a “comedy that takes nothing seriously except fun“, Game Night is one to watch if you fancy a break from your weekly Risk or Catan match.
