In an increasingly disrupted world, individuals and community organisations are working hard to make Aotearoa a little better every day. This new series shines a light on them.
Gee Goff has been driving trucks since the early 80s. “I was in an office for 15 years, and then I just wanted to get out on the road again … I love it,” he says. Gee is up early, before the sun even. As he heads down the motorway, the clouds begin to pink up. “I like it like this,” he laughs. “Quiet.”
When he gets to his destination, the Point Chevalier Woolworths, Gee picks up some big boxes of kale. The frilly bunches are a deep, verdant green. They’re slightly wilted, but still highly nutritious. Since 2021, Gee and the Fair Food team have rescued more than 3 million kgs of food from landfill.
Back at Fair Food headquarters, Gee drops off the veges to the kitchen crew. Jicinta ‘Cinta’ Tuhou is leading today’s small army of volunteers. They wash, peel, chop and turn the rescued food into delicious meals which are then distributed to food banks, transitional housing, shelters, schools and many other community groups.
Fair Food prepares 2,365 kg of kai per day, and they’ve provided over 8.5 million meals so far. It’s a big operation and they’re one of about 30 food rescue partners Woolworths is working with to reduce food waste, keep kai out of landfill and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Spend the day with Fair Food in this episode of A little better every day.
