We are now accepting applications for The Next Page, a programme focusing on the development of early-career magazine editors, with participants receiving mentorship and taking part in three wānanga across the year. Nau mai, haere mai!

Te kaupapa

Editors play a vital role in our media landscape, yet very few opportunities exist to support their development — whether it’s skills training, individualised mentorship, or having the chance to build a community of peers. This programme is a response to that.

Running throughout 2023, The Next Page is designed with and for the next generation of magazine editors in Aotearoa. It will bring together up to 15 editors for three weekends across the year — with sessions focused on developing critical skills, relationships, and industry knowledge — as well as each editor receiving mentorship over a six-month period.

Hosted by The Spinoff in partnership with North & South, Pantograph Punch, Ensemble and E-Tangata, this programme will run on the following dates and will feature discussions and workshops led by industry experts. Note that these include overnight stays as part of the programme:

  • Fri 28 — Sat April 29, 2023 (from 8am Friday to 6pm Saturday)
  • Fri 21 — Sat July 22, 2023 (from 8am Friday to 6pm Saturday)
  • Fri 3 — Sat November 4, 2023 (from 8am Friday to 9.30pm Saturday)

We strongly encourage anyone who identifies as an early-career magazine editor to apply, and in particular editors who are currently under-represented across the industry.

You do not have to be employed at a publication to apply. You may be working as an independent or freelance editor, or working on your own project. Please note, however, that we will be prioritising magazine-style editors who work across some combination of news, interviews, features, profiles, opinion and reviews.

For those successful applicants who are not currently on a full-time salary, we will provide a stipend to cover your time to attend.

This opportunity is open to anyone residing in Aotearoa and we will contribute to travel expenses for those who need to travel in order to attend. Catering and accommodation as part of the wānanga will be covered by the programme.
