We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Apple TV+, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.

If you want to cry and laugh a lot: Live and Let Dai (ThreeNow, September 30)

The three part series follows beloved comedian Dai Henwood as he opens up about his mental, physical and spritutal journey after being diagnosed with incurable bowel cancer three years ago. Premiering tonight on Three and available to watch here on ThreeNow, Henwood described the “cathartic, confronting” experience of making the documentary. “This is a chance for New Zealand to see a side of me I very rarely show the public. It is equal parts heavy and light. I am also confident it is the funniest cancer documentary every made.” A must watch.

If you like compelling crime: John Campbell: The Woman at the Bottom of the Stairs (TVNZ+ October 5)

In a new compelling six-part series for TVNZ, John Campbell searches for answers to a chilling local crime mystery. After Rachel Molloy was found dead at the bottom of her stairs in 2020, the police called it an accident. But Rachel’s mum Mandy and a local media outlet were left with questions — so they contacted John Campbell. The result is this series, where a wide-ranging official information request takes John on a paper trail of surprises which raise even more questions, and leads him to ask whether the police did enough for Rachel and her family.

If you like gritty bilingual drama: Ahikāroa (TVNZ+ October 6)

Season six of New Zealand’s longest-running bilingual soap opera comes to TVNZ on October 6, promising even more drama from this eclectic group of urban rangatahi Māori. “The show delves into many kaupapa. Some are gritty, like partying, alcohol, drugs and sex, but Ahikāroa also isn’t afraid to touch on nuanced aspects of te ao Māori, like politics and spirituality,” wrote Tommy De Silva of the show last year. “The longevity of the series is also a testament to the authenticity of Ahikāroa’s telling of the Māori experience.”

If you are sick of the superhero churn: The Franchise (Neon, October 7)

Created Armando Iannucci (The Thick of It, Veep), Sam Mendes (American Beauty) and Jon Brown (Succession), The Franchise is a hectic dramedy about an extremely dysfunctional film set in the midst of shooting the latest generic Hollywood superhero dross. “At the end of the day the question they face is: is this Hollywood’s new dawn or cinema’s last stand?,” the blurb asks. “Is this a dream factory or a chemical plant?” This is guaranteed to be great.

If you like small town 70s drama: Last Days of the Space Age (Disney+, October 2)

Australia has been on a great run of small town dramas recently, and Last Days of the Space Age looks like a worthy addition to the genre.  Set in 1979, Chaos hits a tight-knit coastal community in Perth after American Space Station Skylab crashes on the outskirts of town. As if that wasn’t enough, the community is readying itself to host the Miss Universe pageant when a power strike threatens to plunge the region into darkness. Beauty queens? Space stuff? ‘Straya? Say no more.
