What are you going to be watching in November? We round up everything coming to streaming services this month, including Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Apple TV+, Neon and TVNZ+.
The biggies
National Treasure: Edge of History (on Disney+ from December 14)
For years, people have been asking for another instalment in the delightfully wacky National Treasure series which starred Nicholas Cage engaging in the worst instances of archaeological malpractice since Indiana Jones. This new instalment follows “brilliant and resourceful dreamer” Jess Valuenzuela (newcomer Lisette Alexis) as she searches for answers about her family, and goes on an adventure of a lifetime to save a Pan-American treasure. A… national treasure, if you will. Catherine Zeta-Jones also stars, in a role that looks basically like this universe’s equivalent of Carmen Sandiego. I, for one, cannot wait./ Sam Brooks
Tell Me Everything (on TVNZ+ from December 9)
Every generation gets the Skins it deserves, and now it seems it’s time for Gen Z to get theirs. Tell Me Everything exists very much in the vein of that seminal aughts drama, revolving around a group of teens with relatable, if slightly exaggeratedly gritty, problems. The central character, Jonny, is hiding undiagnosed depression and anxiety from his best friends Louis and Neve, but a chance meeting with the enigmatic Mei draws him into experimenting with identity, sexuality, relationships and substances. So, yup, Skins, but with access to social media. What could go wrong?/ SB
Slow Horses (season two on AppleTV+ from December 2)
In an era when viewers often have to wait a year or more to find out whether their favourite character survived a cliffhanger, it’s a delightful surprise to get a second season of the great Slow Horses only six months after the first one ended. So welcome back to burping, farting Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) and his team of shabby, underemployed spies – MI5’s least wanted – who somehow still manage to get the bad guys in the end. Each season of Slow Horses is based on one of Mick Herron’s best-selling Slough House novels and we’re up to book two, Dead Lions. With nine more books to go (so far) this show could run and run. / Catherine McGregor
His Dark Materials (season three on Neon from December 6)
This adaptation of Philip Pullman’s landmark fantasy series about a bizarro multiverse returns for a third season, based on the final book in the trilogy, The Amber Spyglass. The series, starring Dafne Keen, James McAvoy and Ruth Wilson, has received deservedly good reviews from both press and fans, and this final season looks to continue the solid run, adding Fleabag’s Sian Clifford and Game of Thrones’ Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje to the cast. / SB
The notables
Gossip Girl (season two on Neon from December 2)
The reboot of the 90s classic is back for a second season of secrets and scandal. This version has the same premise as the original series – a bunch of rich New York teenagers bitch and backstab their way through private school – but the reboot features a diverse cast and spicier storylines, with every second of teen angst captured on social media. The drama never stops, the fashion is incredible and none of these hormonal teenagers have acne. It’s the teen experience you never had, and the only guilty pleasure you’ll need these holidays. / Tara Ward
Educators (season three on TVNZ+ from December 7)
From our round-up in 2020: “Back in ye olde 2019 we called Educators a New Zealand comedy that ‘sings with reckless, dark intelligence’. Good news, Educators is back to sing some more, with a new season of high school hijinks from the nation’s worst teachers. Created by Jackie van Beek, Jesse Griffin and Jonny Brugh, Educators gives us the behind-the-scenes chaos of a state high school and the questionable behaviour of the people who work there. It’s unscripted, it’s brutally funny and it’s one of the best New Zealand comedies in years.” / TW
The Witcher: Blood Origin (on Netflix from December 25)
Is it Christmas without some sort of Witcher related content? Probably. But just in case if you can’t get through the holiday season without spending some time in The Witcher world, Netflix is here with this prequel, set 1,200 years before the events of The Witcher – which itself spans several decades and centuries. Blood Origin will depict the creation of the first Witcher, the events leading to the “Conjunction of the Spheres” (basically why all those monsters exist in the world), and the ancient Elven civilization before its fall. Relative newcomer Sophie Brown (of the excellent Giri/Haji) will be ably supported by Michelle Yeoh, Lenny Henry and Minnie Driver. Fantasy fans tune in. / SB
Wreck (on TVNZ+ from December 30)
Cruise ships have had a bad rap in recent years, and the arrival of Wreck won’t do much to mend their reputation. 19 year old Jamie is all at sea after he joins the crew of cruise ship Sacramentum to work out what happened to his missing sister, only to find himself in the middle of a murder mystery. Wreck is a British comedy-thriller featuring plenty of wacky hijinks on the high seas, most of it coming from a murderer dressed as a big duck. It’s The Love Boat gone feral, it’s the Titanic you wish James Cameron had the courage to make. Bonkers, but in a good way./ TW
The movies
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (on Netflix from December 23)
Is there a more unlikely franchise than Knives Out, the cult hit film by writer/director Rian Johnson? Probably not, but if there’s one film that deserved an anthology-style sequel, it’s this. Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig doing his best Foghorn Leghorn) returns to figure out whodunnit, again. This time we’re transported away from the US to a private island, where billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) has invited his closest friends to attend a murder mystery – during the Covid-19 pandemic, no less. The rest of the cast is stacked, featuring Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista, but the best news is that another Knives Out film has already been confirmed!/ SB
Dog (on Neon from December 17)
Get your hankies ready, because Dog is one of the most amiable tearjearkers of 2022. The film, starring Channing Tatum and co-directed by him and Reid Carolin (former collaborators from the Magic Mike franchise), follows an army ranger who is tasked with escorting the military dog of his fallen friend to his funeral. It received warm reviews earlier this year, with particular praise for Tatum. I also have it on good authority that the titular dog is a very good dog indeed. / SB
White Noise (on Netflix from December 30)
Netflix movies don’t get much more awards-baity than White Noise, the long-awaited adaptation of Don DeLillo’s classic ‘80s novel about consumerism, mortality and the alienation of postmodern life (a cheery Christmas movie this is not). Directed by Noah Baumbach and starring Adam Driver as professor Jack Gladney and Greta Gerwig as his pill-popping wife Babette, White Noise follows the aftermath of a chemical spill that turns the Gladneys’ idyllic college town into a toxic wasteland. For decades, the novel’s surreal elements and minimal plot had it labelled as “impossible to adapt”. It’ll be interesting to see whether Baumbach is able to prove the naysayers wrong. / CM
