Auckland shelters and emergency centres

Auckland Emergency Management has set up a number of Civil Defence Centres and shelters across the region. They are all now open and staffed for people needing refuge from Cyclone Gabrielle

Scroll down for Coromandel and Northland shelters.

  • Shelters: provide a place to be safe while the worst of the weather passes. Blankets and hot drinks will be available, but shelters aren’t equipped for extended stays.
  • Civil Defence Centres (CDCs): are equipped to provide you with a safe place to eat, sleep and access essential support services.

What to bring: items for children and babies, like formula, nappies and toys; essential medicines; photo identification (if you have it); and warm clothes. Pets are welcome but dogs must be on a leash and if possible muzzled. You may be asked to keep your dog in your car. Cats in a cage or carrier, if possible, please.

Official evacuation centres will open in the Thames Coromandel district at 4pm on Sunday and are available at the following locations:

After 7pm today, these sites may revert to stand by if there is no demand, however they can be reactivated within 15 minutes upon request. Contact details are on the doors of these centres.

Northland evacuation centres

Via the Whangarei District Council Facebook page:

If the storm makes it unsafe to stay in your home, there will be two types of places you can go.

Community-led welfare centres

These can be established in local facilities including marae and community halls. These are set up quickly by local communities as required and supported by Civil Defence. There are two community-led welfare centres already operating for the homeless community of Whangarei: Terenga Paraoa Marae on Porowini Avenue (Central Whangarei) and 155 Whare Āwhina (Open Arms), at 155 Kamo Road. More centres may open if needed.

Civil Defence emergency evacuation centres

An official Civil Defence Centre is open now at McKay Stadium Kensington, for people who need to leave their homes. If your home becomes too dangerous to stay in, please stay with friends and family elsewhere if you can. If you have nowhere else to go, come see us at 97 Western Hills Drive, Kensington and we can arrange for basic accommodation.

Staying updated

Keep an eye on these websites and social media channels for the latest updates for your area.

If the power goes out and you have no cellphone service, a solar- or battery-powered radio (or your car radio) can help you keep up to date with the latest news.

The website of your local Civil Defence Emergency Management Group will have information about the local stations you should listen to during an emergency.
