Stalked (Neon, May 4)

Fronted by mental health advocate and social media star Jazz Thornton, the powerful three-part local docuseries Stalked spotlights the experiences of Jazz, Zeni and Tessa, three women whose lives have been profoundly affected by stalking. Directed by the award-winning Justin Hawkes, the series will shine “an unflinching light on the early warning signs of stalking, the patterns of obsession and escalation, and the systemic failings that have left victims unprotected, often until violence erupts.”

The Brokenwood Mysteries (TVNZ+, May 10)

Get ready to return to the fictional town of Brokenwood, as one of New Zealand’s biggest television exports is back for a 12th season. Neil Rea’s detective senior sergeant Mike Shepherd and Fern Sutherland’s detective Kristin Sims are back to investigate such lethal oddities as an attempted alien abduction and a surfing priest with a dark history, in the town that just can’t stop hosting homicides. The curious cases at the heart of The Brokenwood Mysteries might not make sense, but it’s still the most comforting New Zealand show on television.”

Marlon Williams: Ngā Ao E Rua – Two Worlds (MĀORI+, May 4)

With NZ Music month in full swing, there’s no better time to join Marlon Williams on his journey to write Te Whare Tīwekaweka, his award-winning album entirely in te reo Māori. Directed by Ursula Grace Williams, this deeply personal story of reconnection with whakapapa is also surprisingly funny and frank – just wait till you see The Toenail. “But don’t be fooled by the light touch of the filmmaker, or Williams goofing around with a punching bag,” I wrote last year. “This is a brave, essential and joyous film that couldn’t have arrived at a better time. Much more than another music documentary, it feels like quietly witnessing a piece of history.” / Alex Casey

Legends (Netflix, May 7)

Created by Neil Forsyth, one of the UK’s most gifted writers,” the arresting Legends follows a group of run-of-the-mill British Customs officers who are plucked from their mundane positions and given a top-secret mission. They’re to embody their newly-created identities, infiltrate the country’s most dangerous drug gangs, and take them down from the inside. With an ensemble cast that includes Tom Burke, Steve Coogan, and Hayley Squires, the Line of Duty-like Legends is one for lovers of binge-worthy British crime dramas.

Remarkably Bright Creatures (Netflix, May 8)

The heartwarming Remarkably Bright Creatures features Oscar-winning Sally Field as Tova, an elderly widow who forms an unlikely bond with a giant Pacific octopus and Lewis Pullman as Cameron, a wayward young man. Together, in the tight-knit coastal community of Deep Cove, they uncover a mystery that will lead them to a life-changing discovery and restore their sense of wonder.” Arriving just in time for Mother’s Day, this life-affirming dramedy will warm the cockles of your heart.

The Terror: Devil in Silver (Neon, May 8)

In The Terror: Devil in Silver, Dan Stevens is Pepper, an outgoing man from Queens who is wrongfully committed to New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital, an institution that may be home to the Devil himself. Based on the Victor LaValle novel of the same name, the third instalment of the acclaimed horror anthology (and the first to be set in the modern day) is a ‘’true-blue psychological thriller that is bound to make your blood run cold.

Pick of the Flicks: The Drama (AroVision, May 6)

Produced by Hereditary director Ari Aster and helmed by Norwegian provocateur Kristoffer Borgli, The Drama is a rare star-driven film that is willing to tackle big ideas, ask big questions and cause big discomfort.” The premise of the daring film is best kept under wraps, but here’s the short of it: Zendaya and Robert Pattinson play a soon-to-be-married couple whose blissful relationship starts to unravel when a shocking secret from the past comes to light. The Drama, a deliciously disquieting film with no right answers.
