We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.
IT: Welcome to Derry (Neon, October 27)
This hotly-anticipated It prequel lures audiences back to the cursed town of Derry, Maine. Set in the 1960s, at the height of the Cold War and the struggle for racial equality in America, the Hanlon family settles in the creepy community and soon realises something is terribly wrong with Derry and its insidious inhabitants. Like the films, Bill Skarsgård stars as the monstrous Pennywise in the eight-episode horror that “blends history, the supernatural, race relations and intense fear.” The result? “a masterfully woven and terrifying tale,” sure to scare you stiff.
Playing Gracie Darling (ThreeNow, November 2)
Starring New Zealand’s own Morgana O’Reilly alongside Succession’s Harriet Walter, this occult mystery-drama is set 27 years after the disappearance of Gracie, Joni’s (O’Reilly) teenage best-friend who vanished during a spooky séance. When the ritual is brought back to life as a prank and another adolescent goes missing, the still-grieving child psychologist must return to her hometown to uncover the disquieting truth in this “compelling and haunting watch.”
Night Eyes S2 (TVNZ+, October 30)
In the second season of Night Eyes, Aotearoa’s answer to The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, Tai (Scott Cotter), Vim (Donna Brookbanks), Scuff (Rhys Mathewson) and Cadence (Angella Dravid) are teaming up again to ward off a new scourge of evil spirits. The ghost-busting gang are facing off against the malevolent The Cloak and the dangers of the reality-bending time well. If your tamariki doesn’t mind some frights with their funnies, this animated, all-ages TV show is perfect for the whole whānau.
Down Cemetery Road (Apple TV, October 29)
Adapted from the novel of the same name by Slow Horses writer Morwenna Banks, the gripping Down Cemetery Road features Golden Globe-winning Ruth Wilson as Sarah Tucker. Obsessed with finding a child who disappears in the aftermath of an explosion in her quiet Oxford suburb, she teams up with no-nonsense private investigator Zoë Boehm (Emma Thompson) to uncover a life-threatening conspiracy that leads all the way to the hallowed halls of Westminster. Reminiscent of Luther and Ludwig, the thrilling Down Cemetery Road is one-to-watch if you love a British crime drama.
The Wolves Always Come At Night (DocPlay, October 30)
Recently announced as Australia’s submission for the Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards, Gabrielle Brady’s haunting docu-drama The Wolves Always Come At Night documents the turmoil of real-life herders Davaasuren Dagvasuren and Otgonzaya Dashzeveg. Living a nomadic life in rural Mongolia, the young couple are forced to move to Ulaanbaatar and adapt to a new way of life after a seismic storm, fuelled by climate change, ravages their village. Critics say that “Brady’s exploration of the profound trauma caused by physical displacement gets right to the heart of the matter,” so get ready to shed a tear or two.
Pick of the Flicks: Ballad of a Small Player (Netflix, October 29)
Helmed by Oscar-winner Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front, Conclave) and starring Colin Farrell, Ballad of a Small Player is set against the neon haze of Macau and the gluttony of its gargantuan casinos. Farrell plays Lord Doyle, a seedy and sweaty gambler, adrift in the Las Vegas of Asia. When cartoonish Cynthia Blithe (Tilda Swinton) catches-up to him, the bleary-eyed bettor must confront the sins of his past and seek salvation before Macau swallows him whole. This operatic, high-stakes drama has been called “campy and bombastic“ – sure to be a royal flush.
