We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.
We Were Dangerous (Neon, October 5)
We Were Dangerous, the blistering debut feature from director Josephine Stewart-Te Whiu, takes place in 1950s Aotearoa on a far-flung one-dock island. It’s home to the Te Motu School For Incorrigible and Delinquent Girls, a colonial institution dedicated to the religious and cultural reformation of its misfit pupils. The film’s mischievous central trio, Nelly (Erana James), Daisy (Manaia Hall) and Lou (Nathalie Morris), plot a ruinous rebellion as a dark truth about the institution comes to light. With “all the makings of an instant coming-of-age classic,” the fierce We Were Dangerous is essential viewing.
The Twelve S3 (TVNZ+, October 1)
Starring our own Sam Neill and Danielle Cormack, Australian thriller The Twelve focuses on a different court case each season. This time, Barrister Brett Colby (Neill) is defending the husband of a life-long friend. When it is revealed that the victim of the accused was researching the decades-old, unsolved homicide of two teens, Colby and the 12 jurors soon discover that both cases contain a labyrinth of shocking secrets. Set between the claustrophobic confines of a courtroom and the breathtaking expanse of Western Australia, The Twelve is tailor-made for crime-drama obsessives.
Challengers (TVNZ+, October 1)
Directed by Luca Guadagnino and colloquially referred to as that “horny tennis movie,” Challengers stars Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist as a trio of tennis pros entangled in a decade-long love triangle. Their “every expression and gesture throws off a coruscating erotic energy.” Serving up an exhilarating exploration of “the animating thrill of wanting something with every flooded sweat gland on your body,” once you check-out Challengers you’ll never look at tennis (or churros) the same way again.
Monster: The Ed Gein Story (Netflix, October 3)
In the third season of Ryan Murphy’s Monster, Charlie Hunnam plays Ed Gein, the infamous murderer and ghastly grave robber who inspired many of cinema’s most iconic killers. This anthology crime drama peels back the ghoulish mask in an “unflinching, no-holds-barred exploration of who Ed was and what he did. If you’re up for a hair-raising challenge, watch Monster: The Ed Gein Story with the lights turned off.
Billy Joel: And So It Goes (Neon, October 1)
Taking its title from the final track on his 1989 album Storm Front, this mammoth two-part documentary explores the loves, losses, and struggles that shaped the Piano Man’s life and music. Featuring interviews with musical luminaries such as Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, and Nas, alongside candid conversations with family, friends, and ex-wives, the five hour documentary couldn’t be further from your typical “once-over-lightly, papering-over-the-dark-side portrait of a pop star.”
Pick of the Flicks: The Lost Bus (Apple TV+, October 3)
Best known for The Bourne Identity and the Oscar-nominated Captain Phillips, director Paul Greengrass is at the helm of this “story of human resilience in the direst of straits“. Inspired by Lizzie Johnson’s account of the devastating 2018 fire that laid waste to Northern California, Matthew McConaughey plays Kevin McKay, a down-on-his-luck bus driver caught up in the apocalyptic inferno. In this “old-school disaster spectacle,” he must heroically drive a busload of screaming school children through the roaring hellscape to safety. Sure to bring the heat, and leave you sweat-drenched.
