We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.
The Last Frontier (Apple TV+, October 10)
Described as “Con Air meets The Fugitive,” The Last Frontier sees Oppenheimer’s Jason Clarke star as the lone U.S. Marshal of a remote Alaskan town. His peaceful life is upended when a prison transport plane crashes nearby, freeing its cargo of notorious inmates. With the help of a disgraced CIA agent (Haley Bennett) who’s desperate to appease her superiors, the fractious duo begin to track down the escapees, unwittingly ensnaring themselves in a chilling conspiracy. Also, featuring New Zealander Simone Kessell and the Oscar-nominated Alfre Woodard, this action-packed TV show is bound to take you back to the glory days of Cage, Willis, and Stallone.
Film Club (ThreeNow, October 8)
Created by Sex Education star Aimee Lou Wood, comedy drama Film Club follows the agoraphobic Evie (Wood), a down-on-her-luck screen junkie who transforms their mum’s garage – themed decorations and all – into a home cinema and temporary oasis every Friday night. When Noa (Nabhaan Rizwan), her best friend and film club devotee, announces that he’s moving to the other side of the country for a dream job, the two must confront the feeling that they might be more than just cinephilic chums. If you’re a sucker for a friends-to-lovers slow burn, this “beautifully honest” TV show is the reel deal.
Boots (Netflix, October 9)
In this series inspired by former US Marine Greg Cope White’s memoir The Pink Marine, Miles Heizer (13 Reasons Why) plays Cameron Cope, a closeted, directionless teen who joins the Marines Corps with his ride-or-die best friend. Set in the 90s, when homosexuality in the military was still illegal, Heizer forges unlikely friendships and searches for his place in the world, while enduring the unrelenting rigours of Marine boot camp and its screaming, bald-headed drill instructors. It’ll be a battle not to binge this “irreverent, offbeat take on the coming-of-age story.”
The Woman in Cabin 10 (Netflix, October 10)
Based on the bestselling novel of the same name, and directed by Australian Simon Stone, this psychological thriller follows Lo Blacklock (Keira Knightley), a travel writer assigned to cover the launch of a luxury yacht. While out at sea, she witnesses someone being tossed overboard. The victim? The Woman in Cabin 10. The twist? Everyone onboard has been accounted for. As Blacklock begins to unravel this Agatha Christie-like mystery, the prowling passengers and circling crew become as treacherous as the high seas. Like a rogue wave, nothing in this film is predictable.
We Live In Time (Neon, October 9)
From John Crowley (Brooklyn) comes We Live In Time, “an old-fashioned weeper, done with heart and originality.” Taking place across a decade and told in non-linear snapshots, Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield are lovers brought together in a surprise encounter. They fall head over heels for each other, building a life together, until a gut-wrenching diagnosis puts their starry-eyed love story to the test. Exploring the “questions we will all have to face at some time in our lives,” this bittersweet A24 romance is sure to leave you teary-eyed.
Pick of the Flicks: Sound of Metal (Neon, October 12)
In the Oscar-winning Sound of Metal, Riz Ahmed is Ruben, a recovering addict and heavy metal drummer who loses his hearing. Raging against his new reality, Lou (Olivia Cooke), his partner and bandmate, rushes him to a facility for deaf people in recovery from addiction. Run by Joe (Paul Raci), it becomes “a place to teach him how to live with deafness, not to correct it.” Gorgeously lensed and paired with experiential, first-person sound design, this reminder “of cinema’s unique ability to challenge, entertain, uplift and unite,” deserves to be seen and heard.
